Robbie Keane may be gone from the Irish camp, but his influence is still being felt by the current players.
To some fanfare, Robbie Brady was yesterday revealed as the new wearer of the no. 10 jersey, which was Keane’s during his long tenure with the Republic of Ireland.
His new squad number was shared by the FAI in the minutes before the World Cup qualifier against Serbia, which ended in a draw.
After the game, Brady told reporters that he had sent Keane a text about taking over the jersey and got a crafty quip in response.
“I just sent Robbie a little text and said I’d try not do too much damage to it,” Brady said.
“He said ‘don’t worry, you only need to score 69 goals’.”
Brady added that his former captain wished him all the best in the jersey.
“He’s happy I have it and congratulated me on it. I’m hoping to go from strength to strength and put in some more good performances for Ireland.
“It’s a massive honour.”
