Jimmy Fortune needed all his strength in the saddle to drive Brick Red home in the Casino At bet365.com Handicap at Newmarket today.
The 9-2 favourite was under heavy pressure a furlong and a half out as Dane O'Neill kicked for home on Beauchamp Xerxes.
For a few strides it looked like a race-winning move but Andrew Balding's Brick Red finally found top gear and eventually ran out a cosy length-and-a-quarter winner with Viva Vettori third.
Balding said: "He was late starting this year but he has made up for it by winning three in the autumn.
"He could be a Lincoln horse next spring and he's just a nice, big, handicap horse."
Godolphin landed the Listed bet365 Ben Marshall Stakes courtesy of Kingsfort, but it was the wrong one in the betting as far as punters were concerned as the third string prevailed at 10-1 under Daragh O'Donohoe.
Hungarian raider Letty took the field along at a furious pace before eventual runner-up The Cheka, beaten a length and a quarter, took over but was overhauled by the winner inside the final furlong.
Godolphin's Secrecy was sent off the well-backed 15-8 favourite although he and their other representative Alexandros could only muster fourth and last respectively.
Diana Cooper, representing Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor, said: "It was very nice to get him back on a winning track. He was nice and fresh and battled on well and he will be a very useful horse at the Dubai Carnival."
Godolphin gained a quickfire Listed race double when Blue Bunting (10-1) benefited from a power-packed Ahmed Ajtebi ride to land the bet365.com EBF Montrose Fillies' Stakes.
Connections have Classic pretensions for their charge after she showed her toughness despite being headed by Ryan Moore on Elas Diamond but battling back in the last 100 yards to beat that rival by a length.
Cooper said: "She'll be off to Dubai for the winter and aimed at the UAE 1,000 Guineas and Oaks and those sorts of races. She has franked her form this year and shown here how well she has grown into herself."
