Nevin one fight from a medal

Team Ireland can win their first medal at the Olympic games tonight when John Joe Nevin fights Oscar Valdez Fierro of Mexico in their bantamweight quarter-final.

A win for Nevin would mean the boxer is guaranteed at least a bronze medal with a potential semi-final to come.

That fight is set for an 8.45pm start tonight.

Derek Burnett is the first Irish Olympian to feature today, he is taking part in the Men’s Trap qualification in Shooting.

He started at 9am and is currently joint second with 24 hits out of 25, one behind the two Croatian shooters, CERNOGORAZ Giovanni Cernogoraz and Anton Glasnovic.

In cycling, Martin Irvine features on day two of the men’s omnium from 10am.

First up is the 4km individual pursuit, and then at 5pm it’s the 15km race in the final event of the omnium.

Also this morning is the beginning of the women’s marathon which includes three Irish athletes - Linda Byrne, Ava Hutchinson and Catriona Jennings.

That one gets underway at the London Mall at 11am.

Also at 11am, Cian O’Connor and Billy Twomey compete in the second qualifying round of the individual show jumping competition.

At midday, Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern begin race 12 of the Men’s 49er, and then at 1pm Peter O’Leary and David Burrows feature in the men’s Star medal race where they will start from 9th place.
