Nevin and Joyce claim gold at EU boxing championships

Irish 2008 Olympian John Joe Nevin and David Oliver Joyce both claimed gold at the European Union Championships in Cetniewo, Poland this afternoon.

But there was disappointment for Irish light flyweight Paddy Barnes after he was beaten 25-11 by ex European champion and three times Hungarian Olympian Pal Bedak.

Nevin, from the Cavan Boxing Club, finished on top of the podium following a thrilling 10-6 win over Polish bantamweight Mazik Mateusz.

And Joyce, of the St Michael's Athy club, made it two gold medals wins for Ireland after Croatian featherweight Mirsad Ahmeti retired in Round 3.
