15-year-old Georgia Drummy has become the youngest Irish player ever to qualify for a Grand Slam event.
Overnight the Mount Anville student defeated American Helen Abigail Altick to qualify for the junior Australian Open, despite her opponent being 115 places ahead of her in the rankings.
According to tennisireland.ie Drummy dominated the match from the start, taking the first set 6-2. Altick fought back in the second to tie the set at 6-6, but the Irish girl controlled the tie-break from the start and closed it out 7-2, sealing a straight sets victory.
The win earned Drummy a place among the 64 players in the main draw.
My favourite stat of the #AusOpen: At 15, Georgia Drummy is the youngest Irish player ever to qualify for a junior Slam. Brilliant effort.— Leigh Walsh (@LeighWalsh87) January 21, 2016
It is Drummy’s first time playing in a tennis major.
The teenager is a member of the BNP Paribas National Academy and is described by Tennis Ireland as “a girl who has been ahead of her years in Irish Tennis for some time”.
