Ireland U17s lose to Spain in UEFA clash

Republic of Ireland U17s 1 Spain U17s 3

Spanish striker Ruben Rochina came off the bench to score twice and inflict a third defeat on Ireland at the UEFA Under-17 Championship in Antalya, Turkey.

Out of the tournament and with only pride to play for, Ireland began well and deserved their 15th minute lead from a well contrived move.

Captain Conor Clifford burst past a couple of Spaniards to pick out the run of Conor Hourihane whose momentum took him into the box fro him to finish with a low drive to the far corner of the net from 14 yards.

But Spain enjoyed far more possession and hit back to level five minutes into the second half when Rochina shot home from Keke's pass.

A foul by Gavin Gunning on Adria Carmona on 55 minutes gave Rochina the chance of his second which he duly took, curling a low free-kick round the wall and past Ger Hanley into the bottom corner of the Irish keeper's net.

Hourihane volleyed against the bar while subsitute Robbie Brady blazed over before Spain sealed their win on 71 minutes.

Ruben was involved again as he set up Keke who showed good feet before shooting past Hanley from ten yards.

Spain thus win Group B and meet Holland in the semi-final on Tuesday while host Turkey play France.
