Hurling League Division 2A round-up

Carlow and Westmeath sealed away victories, while Down and Wicklow shared the spoils in Division 2A of the Hurling League this afternoon.

At Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney, a large crowd watched on as visitors Carlow gained a 0-20 to 1-13 win over Kerry.

Paudie Kehoe scored 11 points for Kevin Ryan's victorious side in a game which saw Carlow finish strongly.

Kerry led by 1-10 to 0-8 at the interval with Shane Nolan (1-3) netting their goal. The sides were tied at 1-12 to 0-15 with 10 minutes remaining, with Craig Doyle and Kehoe in inspirational form for the Barrowsiders late on.

A strong display in the closing stages earned Westmeath's hurlers a 3-19 to 2-13 triumph over Derry at Celtic Park.

Westmeath led by 2-9 to 2-8 at half-time, with Dan Carty and Paul Greville netting the visitors' goals.

Earlier on an 11th minute Alan Grant goal had helped Derry take a 1-3 to 0-4 lead, but Carty's goal pushed Westmeath 1-6 to 1-3 in front at the start of the second quarter.

Greville and Kevin Hinphey swapped goals late in the half, with Westmeath holding a one-point interval lead.

Brian Hanley's side took control on the restart and moved 2-17 to 2-9 in front. Andrew Dermody completed the midlanders' hat-trick of goals late on.

Four late points from Jonathan O'Neill ensured a share of the spoils for Wicklow as they drew with Down - 0-17 to 2-11 - at Pairc Esler in Newry.

Wicklow led by 0-8 to 0-6 at the interval, but goals from Paul Braniff and Danny Toner pushed Down ahead on the restart.

The hosts led by four points with 10 minutes left, but O'Neill showed great accuracy make sure his side took something out of the game.
