Houghton cuts short Brazil duty

Ray Houghton is on his way home from Brazil today amid reports he has suffered a "minor" health scare.

The former Ireland and Liverpool player had been working as a commentator for RTE during the World Cup.

Viewers were left confused on Saturday night when George Hamilton commentated the Netherlands vs Costa Rica game alone. Hamilton made no mention of Houghton’s absence during the broadcast and neither did any of the panel in the studio.

An RTE spokesperson has confirmed he is returning but would not go into any detail as to why, saying only: "Ray Houghton is on his way home due to personal reasons."

The broadcaster is expected to organise a replacement for the commentator after Hamilton commentated on all 120 minutes of Saturday’s match plus the penalty shoot-out alone.
