Here's why LeBron James won't be making a Colin Kaepernick-style anthem protest

Don’t expect to see NBA star LeBron James protesting during the US national anthem any time soon.

Speaking at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ media day, James made it clear he fully supports Colin Kaepernick’s decision not to stand for the Star-Spangled Banner before NFL games as a protest against racial and social injustice.

But the 31-year-old will not be following suit.

He said: “Standing for the national anthem is something I will do. That’s who I am. That’s what I believe.

“But that doesn’t mean I don’t respect and don’t agree with what Colin Kaepernick is doing.”

James also spoke about what it means to be a father of young children at a time when trust in the police among people of colour is so low.

A reported 40-plus NFL players joined the protests this weekend started by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick, either my kneeling or raising a fist during the anthem.
