Galway 2-16 Roscommon 0-6
Galway eased through to the Connacht SFC semi-finals as they dispatched Roscommon with some ease at Pearse Stadium this afternoon.
Second-half goals from Matthew Clancy and substitute Niall Coleman wrapped up a comfortable win for Galway, which sees them through to a last-four meeting with Leitrim on June 15.
Roscommon, in Michael Ryan's first championship game in charge, were competitive in the first half but they only scored two pointed frees in the second period as their challenge waned.
Galway had popped over the game's opening five points, the Rossies' leading attacking light, Senan Kilbride, replied impressively with three successive white flags.
The visitors could have been celebrating a goal in the ninth-minute but Jonathan Dunning's clipped shot was just inches wide of the Galway goal.
Two frees from championship debutant Paul Conroy steadied Galway before Kilbride took over briefly. Points from Clancy and Karol Mannion saw the opening half end 0-6 to 0-4 in Galway's favour.
Galway then assumed complete control in the second half and they stretched their lead to five points with well-struck efforts from Padraic Joyce, Clancy and Michael Meehan.
Roscommon's chances of mounting a comeback dipped when their centre-forward Gary Cox was sent-off for a second bookable offence in the 44th-minute.
Points from Conroy (free) and Clancy kept Galway on track and the game took on a one-sided feel as the home side began to dominate possession.
Two Ger Heneghan frees were all Roscommon could offer in response. Galway were not content with points however and they broke through for their first goal in the 58th-minute.
Clancy found the bottom right corner of the Rossies' net after collecting an excellent cross-field pass from recently-appointed captain Joyce.
That strike put 12 points between the sides and Galway cantered home by finding the visitors' net again in the last-minute.
After late points from Conroy and Meehan, Coleman slotted home his major to complete a good day at the office for Liam Sammon's men.
