The Leinster-Munster rivalry is alive and well, as Cian Healy discovered when he sent this tweet after Munster’s last-gasp win over Sale in the European Champions Cup on Saturday.
Lap of honour?— Cian Healy (@ProperChurch) October 18, 2014
The Leinster and Ireland prop asked “lap of honour?”, appearing to refer to the Munster players going to the sidelines to thank their travelling support for making the trip to England.
The comment was seen as a dig by some Munster fans and they were very quick to respond to the player, with several getting in jibes at Leinster at the same time.
@ProperChurch You wouldn't understand. Munster fans travel.— Gavan Casey (@GavanCasey) October 18, 2014
Even the official Munster Rugby twitter account weighed in on the discussion.
Among those who responded was Jean-Marie Stander, wife of Munster’s Man of the Match CJ Stander. She too suggested that as a Leinster player Healy might not understand the connection between the Munster team and their supporters.
Healy quickly rowed back on the comment in a second tweet, insisting the tweet was “not a stab at the lads at all”.
Easy tigers, not a stab at the lads at all, supporters must be shown appreciation for sure. Came across wrong , apologies.— Cian Healy (@ProperChurch) October 18, 2014
Think that was the right move Cian, Ireland’s provincial rugby rivalry is still strong and these Munster fans have long memories.
