England manager Fabio Capello must shoulder the ultimate responsibility for England’s failure in the World Cup, according to Sunderland manager Steve Bruce.
The English team have received some stinging criticism for their poor showing in the tournament, which saw them beaten 4-1 by Germany in the last 16 stage after limping through the qualifying group.
“We all back home are thoroughly dejected and bitterly disappointed at what happened,” said Bruce.
“They were a pale shadow of what they can produce. We haven’t performed.”
The Sunderland boss was left in no doubt as to who need to take the blame, saying that, just as in the Premier League, the manager must be the one to assume responsibility.
“There’s one man to cane and one man to blame,” said Bruce “It’s part and parcel.”
