Trish Dromey gets the lowdown on quirky, stylish and spacious property in Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare.

This distinctive double gable fronted bungalow near Newmarket on Fergus, Co Clare, has been given a slightly Spanish style look by its owners.

“It was something my wife saw in a book,’’ reveals the man of the house explaining that the unusual shape at the front has been achieved by adding on wings at the sides. The architect who designed it for them 31 years ago also included a bay window, an arched doorway and some decorative fascia boards to achieve the Spanish-style look they wanted.

It started out as a double gabled bungalow with one bay window and an attached garage but the owners later replaced the garage with an extension and added on a second bay window as well an arched one.

When they built it, they also put in two stables and a sand arena at the back for their daughter’s ponies. “The ponies are long gone now and the sand arena is now being used as a dog run,’’ reveals the owner.

The interior of the 1,600 sq ft three bed property has been finished to a high standard with marble tiled as well as oak and Indian slate flooring. It was comprehensively redecorated by the owners around four years ago.

Inside the front entrance is a spacious oak floored hallway with double doors leading to a long kitchen/dining room connected to the sitting room at one end by two archways.

The sitting room is a comfortable looking space with bay window, a cream coloured marble fireplace, oak flooring and ceiling cornicing, while the kitchen dining room has polished marble tiled flooring, white island units with timber corbels at the sides and a mix of white and oak fitted units.

A door at the back of the kitchen leads into a utility room. At this side of the bungalow there is a also a bathroom as well as two bedrooms. The bathroom is elaborately decorated with wainscoting and damask wallpaper and it has a large shower. The bedrooms are spacious and timber floored- with fitted units.

In the extension at the side the owners added on a living room as well as a master bedroom which has a bay window and an en suite. The living/TV room has a gothic style timber doorway, Indian slate floor tiles and a cast iron fireplace as well as an arched window overlooking the driveway.

The property has a gated entrance with stone pillars, lawned gardens and a gravel driveway at the front and a sand arena and two concrete stables at the rear, which are now used for storage.

Located on the Drumline Road, the property is a little less than six kilometres from Shannon, seven from Newmarket on Fergus and 20 from Limerick city.

Guiding the property at €349,000, Fachtna O’Donovan of Sherry FitzGerald O’Donovan says it’s an attractive and spacious family home which will appeal to buyers from both Shannon and Limerick. “It offers easy access to the M18 and is just a five minute drive from Shannon and a 15 minute one from Limerick city,” he says, adding that the Drumline Road area is popular with trade up buyers.
