A diehard fan of Home & Away, Megan O’Brien made sure that a stop-off at the soap’s iconic “Summer Bay” set was firmly on the itinerary during her holiday in Australia with her boyfriend Peter Murphy.

While strolling down a pathway to the beach, she turned around to see that Peter had dropped to one knee to propose.

Megan and Peter, from Ballygarvan, first met in the queue for Cubins nightclub in Cork 10 years ago: “Peter caught my eye and it turned out he went to college with one of my friends.

"We hit it off instantly and ended up chatting for the night!”

They moved to Canada and it was soon after they decided it was time to return to Ireland that they got engaged.

“My family had emigrated to Perth so we had taken the long way home to visit them,” said Donnybrook native Megan.

They were wed recently in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Darrara, by Father Martin Heffernan and held their reception in Fernhill House Hotel in Clonakilty.

Wedding photographer Emily Doran and videographer Aodhagan O’Riordan of One Love Photography captured the big day on camera.

The bride and groom describe Fernhill House as their “dream wedding venue”.

“We also stopped in Kitty Mac’s pub in Ring for a drink with the bridal party after the ceremony,” said Megan.

The bride’s grandmother, Marie O’Brien, was by her side on the occasion: “I was raised by my grandmother so she gave me away.

"The bridal party and I got ready in my grandmother’s house. It was so lovely getting ready in the house I grew up in.”

Playing a key role were the groom’s parents, Teresa and Barry Murphy.

Olive Moloney was maid of honour and the bridesmaids and bridesman were Cliona Looney, Gillian Vaughan and Michael Kenny: “I grew up in the same park as Olive, Cliona and Michael and we have been best friends our whole lives.

"Gillian is Peter’s sister and I was her bridesmaid two years ago so it was so nice to have her part of our day.”

Peter’s brother, Ian, was his best man with his friends Mark Kennefick, Stephen O’Sullivan and Shane McKeogh as groomsman.

Emma and Lily Desmond enjoyed their roles as flowergirls: “Lily is also my goddaughter, so it made it extra special…and she absolutely stole the show!”

She and Peter describe their big day as fun and relaxed: “The photobooth by The Rhythm Booth and the Fernhill Pizza Parlor (black pudding pizza is definitely a must!) were huge hits! Bog the Donkey had the dance floor full all night — everyone agreed they made the night so much fun.

"Another highlight for us personally was our wedding car and the ‘Gorgeous George’ bus from All Events Limousines!”

Megan wore a Nicole Spose dress sourced in Diamond Bridal, Cork, teamed with a headpiece from Azure Jewellery, Cork. The bridal hairstyling was by Lynsey O’Leary with Linda Collins as makeup artist.

Jill Wild took care of the floral arrangements and the wedding cake was by Broken Spoon Cakes, while LB Design and Print created the wedding stationery.

Peter and his groomsmen bought their suits in Simply Suits.

Megan is a project manager and Peter works in finance.

The newlyweds, who will live in Riverstick, set off to Croatia for a mini-moon after their big day and are planning to go on honeymoon next year.
