Gardening notes: Your guide to what's on
A brand-new nature trail for children has opened at Mount Congreve Gardens, outside Waterford City, free of charge for the month of August. The new looped trail will keep everyone happy, with a buggy-friendly path for smaller kids, and a series of questions for older ones to solve along the way. The trail is 1.5km long and can be completed in about 40 minutes.

Cork GIY is holding a bring-and-share Harvest Day on Saturday, August 31, from 2pm-5pm in the Hydro Farm Allotments Tower/Blarney.

This is a knowledge fun day with barbecue included, and potted herbs, vegetables and salads available. The event is in aid of Heidi who has cerebral palsy. All are welcome and admission is free.

■ It’s never too early to be winter-ready and the organiccentre.ie is running a polytunnel autumn workshop with Hans Wieland on Saturday, August 24, cost €70. Learn about harvesting, plan your rotation for next year, revise your layout, sow and plant for winter harvesting, and get your overwintering crops established. Hans will demonstrate the use of green manure, give a tour of the centre’s polytunnels, and offer plenty of ideas and inspiration for next year. See organiccentre.ie

■ Garden lovers everywhere will be saddened by the news that a garden centre set up by the Cistercian monks in Co Louth over 50 years ago closed its doors this week.

The monks said: “Given the changed circumstances within the monastic community and the Irish horticultural sector, regrettably the monastic community has taken the decision to close Mellifont Abbey Gardens and to cease trading.”

■ SSE Airtricity and Dublin Zoo have teamed up for a weekend of activities to help inspire families to protect our planet on August 24 and 25, from 12-4pm in the zoo. Events include mini worm excavation, the Bug Hotel, and a Wild Welcoming Garden area for the little ones where they will learn about the power of bees and the importance of biodiversity. The event is included as part of the zoo entry price.
