Irish silver salver sells for $37,500 in New York

A LARGE Irish silver salver by Thomas Walker, Dublin, with the Doneraile arms sold for $37,500 at Sotheby’s online Style sale in New York on Thursday.

Dated 1747 the arms are those of St Leger with Deane in pretense for St Leger Aldworth MP.

He assumed the name St Leger on inheriting the estates of his maternal ancestors and in 1776 became Baron Doneraile of Doneraile.

A pair of c1835 Irish giltwood caned armchairs in the manner of James Del Vecchio sold for $8,125. Del Vecchio was a firm of carvers and gilders active in Dublin from 1797 to c1860.

A George IV two-handled tray by John Bridge of London with the arms of the See of Tuam, Killala and Achonry made $11,875.

Power Trench, the Bishop of Tuam, was brother of Richard, 2nd Earl of Clancarty. A pair of silver candlesticks by John Walker made $4,750 and a set of four silver entree dishes with the arms of the Smith-Barry family of Fota House in Cork failed to sell. They had been estimated at $25,000-$35,000.

An early 19th-century Irish walnut side table from a private collection in Connecticut estimated at $8,000-$12,000 also failed to find a buyer.
