For the love of art: Ruth Daly's Three Wise Men

Three Wise Men painting by Dr Ruth Daly.

A former Cork dentist returned to her passion for painting late in life and has produced enough work for an exhibition of her own.

Currently showing at Ballymaloe Grainstore, Dr Ruth Daly would be familiar to many of the country’s dentists from her time as a tutor in UCC’s School of Dentistry before her retirement in 2001.

Now in her 80s, Dr Daly was a keen painter in childhood, but recalls how “the girls were encouraged to aim for the more traditional and safe professions and there was possibly an unfair stigma against pursuing a career as an artist”.

Dentistry, teaching and the rearing of her children meant painting pursuits were put on hold for many years, but her renewed efforts were rewarded last year when one of her her paintings, Three Wise Men, was selected for the Royal Irish Academy’s summer exhibition in Dublin.

That particular work also features in the Ballymaloe exhibition, alongside almost 40 other paintings Dr Daly created through the decades.

Three Wise Men, an exhibition of paintings by Ruth Daly, runs at Ballymaloe Grainstore until April 29
