6 cookbook photographers to follow on Instagram

Instagram can be a really beautiful place – as long as you steer clear of buying everything you see (difficult, we know), and avoid following people who make you feel inadequate (also quite difficult).

It’s an especially good platform if food is your thing though.

However, if you already follow lots of food writers and chefs, and still need a little dinner inspiration, these food photographers – whose pictures likely fill the cookbooks on your shelves – are very worthy of a follow…

1. Patricia Niven

Food and portrait photographer Niven is probably best known for her bold, punchy shots of the bright and welcoming Middle Eastern dishes served up at London restaurant Honey & Co. and in its accompanying cookbooks.

2. David Loftus

Loftus is a giant amongst cookbook photographers, snapping the food of Nathan Outlaw, Rukmini Iyer, Rachel Khoo, Gennaro Contaldo, plus the one and only Jamie Oliver. Expect snippets of his work, plus lots of pics from his travels.

3. Laura Edwards

The first few copies of my new book have arrived. From the Oven to the Table is full of dishes you can ‘bung in the oven’ and has everything from ideas for chicken thighs (cook them with plums, honey, cumin and pomegranate molasses) to great vegetable dishes (roast autumn vegetables with walnut-miso sauce) and puddings (baked stone fruit with almond and orange flower water crumbs). There are both easy suppers and more celebratory dishes to cook for Sunday lunch and special occasions. There are loads of vegetable dishes too (long chapters of spring and summer vegetables and autumn and winter vegetables) because I eat way more of them than I used to and I have to think hard in order to keep the dishes simple but interesting. This type of cooking - in which food is transformed just by the heat of the oven - is the kind I do most. I started it after I had children because it was easy and two of my books - Cook Simple and Simple - have featured this kind of food. From the Oven to the Table focusses completely on the oven. I really love the recipes. Out September. Photographed by the amazing @laurajayneedwards, designed by @mirandh14, cooked by @jossherd73, edited by Lucy Bannell (my usual team).

Laura Edwards’ precise but spare, ethereal but enticing food photos are filled with natural light and vintage wrinkled linens – and Diana Henry is a huge fan.

4. Nassima Rothacker

Nassima Rothacker captures the essence of a place and a cuisine in her photography, fusing food and travel – particularly in her work on chef Tim Anderson’s Japanese cookbooks.

Food writer, farmer and photographer Mark Diacono does it all – writing his cookbooks and shooting the accompanying pics. Happily his feed is as much dedicated to his food as it is shots of his dog running on the beach.

Parrinder’s glossy shots of many a Bake Off contestant (Kim-Joy Hewlett and Candice Brown, plus the likes of Tom Daley) are strong, striking and generally pop with colour, pattern and witty styling.
