Sinéad McCarthy is the general manager at The Brehon Hotel and here she gives us an insight into her working life.
I chose to pursue a career in hospitality as I love to meet and interact with people, and also because there are great career opportunities both in Ireland and abroad in this industry.
I joined the team at The Brehon as bar manager in 2014. I then progressed through the ranks as food and beverage manager, operations manager, and interim general manager, before being promoted to the role of general manager in April 2018.
Every day is exactly the same, I bet you weren’t expecting that answer! Guest expectations never change, they always look for exceptional service and rightly so. It is up to us to deliver this 365 days-a-year.
Many concert-goers and event attendees choose to stay at The Brehon when attending something in the INEC Arena.
Our reputation for food and our beautiful surroundings makes us a favoured venue for weddings all year round and then, many of our guests stay with us to simply relax and enjoy our spa or explore the National Park. During the heatwave of 2018, we hosted both the civil ceremony and wedding reception of a fabulous couple from Limerick.
As it was going to be a summer wedding, we had planned and arranged for the civil ceremony to take place on The Brehon Lawn overlooking Killarney National Park. But when it came to the big day,
temperatures were forecast to reach a blistering 30C, we had not experienced anything like it before.
We knew it was going to be insufferably hot for the wedding guests, but we did not want to disappoint the couple by having to move their dream ceremony indoors. Instead, we moved the entire civil ceremony to a section of the gardens shaded by a beautiful 100-year-old sycamore tree.
We even organised a special table with sunscreen, water, and fans for the guests.
It stands out in my memory simply because it proves that old adage… where there’s a will, there’s a way.
I love that people entrust us with their family occasions and their getaways.
Ensuring our guests have an amazing time with us and seeing many familiar faces return time and time again is a major driving force for me. But more so than that, I love witnessing the pride of place and dedication to work inherent in the Brehon team. That kind of authentic hospitality should never be taken for granted.
I’ve had quite a few unusual surprises down through the years, it’s all part of the job, but I’m bound by the hoteliers’ unofficial charter of client/customer confidentiality so my lips are sealed!
