You've Been Served: Sandra Murphy, Trigon Hotel Group

Sandra Murphy is group event creation and production manager with Trigon Hotel Group in Cork

I have always worked in hospitality with the exception of a stint in retail management.

My career began after college with Aer Lingus where I worked as ground operations and also cabin crew. I was Shannon-based and on transatlantic flights so after September 11, I decided to leave crew and joined Dunnes Stores as a manager.

During my time in Dunnes, I went back to college by night and studied human resource management. On completion of that course, I joined the Jurys Doyle Group and was the HR manager in Jurys Inn Cork and Jurys Hotel on the Western Rd. I was the HR manager during the closure which was an incredible experience.

I then decided to go into business with my own restaurant. I had the Rising Tide Restaurant for 12 years and closed that in 2016.

For the past three years, I have been the group event creation and production manager for the Trigon Hotel Group which comprises the Cork International Hotel, the Cork Airport Hotel, and the Metropole Hotel. This particular role arose at the perfect time and I am delighted to be working with such a progressive hotel group.

It is a cliché but, certainly, no day is very typical. However, as a general rule, I get up at 6.30am, shower, have breakfast, and catch up on any news stories overnight.

I work across three hotels so dependent on what meetings are scheduled, I try to base myself in the most convenient hotel.

As the group event creator, I am always working on the events that are approaching but in the background working on new event concepts. It is an incredibly busy but exciting department but there is a lot of juggling and managing of so many aspects within an event.

In general, any event is 12 months in the planning from conceptual stage to eventually opening the doors to the public on a weekend.

It is always incredibly tense and daunting in the lead-up but it is always an incredibly proud and emotional experience to see the event take life.

The best part of my job without a doubt is having the freedom, flexibility, and control to create whatever I can imagine and believe.

The managing director of the Trigon Group, Aaron Mansworth, is really passionate about people and empowering people. From the day I started this role, he said to me to never fear failure with an event as, if I don’t face failure, I’m not taking risks or trying hard enough.
