You've Been Served: Ashleigh O'Connor, spa manager at Portmarnock Hotel

Denise O'Donoghue hears from Ashleigh O’Connor, the spa manager in the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links, Co Dublin. Portmarnock.com

I have been in the beauty industry for over 13 years. The industry has always been in my blood and I’ve had a passion for it since I was a young girl.

At present I am the spa manager in the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.

I took up this position in May 2017 and have been loving it ever since.

We have a great team of beauty therapists, who are really passionate about their jobs.

Generally, my job is to be the face of the spa, but my typical working day really revolves around my team. I aim to create a harmonised working environment for them, and to be a strong leader.

I have regular one-on-one consultations with my clients and also meet with other departments in Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links to maximise awareness for the spa.

I love my career, but if I didn’t work in this industry I would say I would do something in the medical side as I’m fascinated with the anatomy and physiology of the body.

Skincare is a great passion of mine. It’s an industry that’s constantly evolving and changing. We are living in very exciting times with new technologies and result-driven treatments.

I had a client who sought advice for her adult acne. She was in a very stressful job at the time which didn’t help her skin condition but needed help as she was getting married that year.

After sitting with her and hearing her concerns, we proceeded with a course of Eminence Acne peels to help treat her skin.

We saw instant results, and as the treatments went on the acne reduced dramatically. She was able to get married with no insecurities. This was last year, and she still comes to me for “maintenance” treatments. To see a client come into the spa in distress over their skin, and to have them leaving with a glowing complexion is a fulfilling moment.

My happiest memories are the ones where I’m able to help those who ask for my help. Seeing a happy client leave the spa at Portmarnock and seeing my team smile at the end of a long day are the best parts of my job.

Customer satisfaction is always our goal for our clients and to ensure they have a relaxing and immersive experience.

Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links is located along the gorgeous Velvet Strand so it’s hard not to be relaxed in this beautiful setting!
