THEY met on a night out in Killarney and Anne (known to all by her nickname Peig) O’Sullivan and Jason Mangan got engaged in Malaga.

The couple’s paths crossed when Jason, from Cork, was on a night out in Peig’s native Killarney, Co Kerry. “Jay had come down to Killarney by bus for a night out with his friends, We snuck away for a drink on our own and we just clicked,” said Peig.

Jason’s proposal plans were foiled no fewer than three times during their first holiday together, in Malaga, in September 2016. “It was a rollercoaster of a week as my auntie Martina had just passed away a few days before we flew out and my mom was waiting on results from a biopsy to see if her breast cancer had returned,” said Peig.

“We knew her results were back on Monday and we flew out the previous Friday so it was an emotional time.

“Jay attempted to propose three times on the holiday but I kept ruining his plans. He wanted to pop the question before Monday evening as he was aware that my sister would be ringing about Mom’s results.”

The first attempt was when they were out jet-skiing. “But I kept leaning the wrong way and turning us over in the water,” said Peig.

The second time, Jay decided to pop the question over dinner. “Then I decided last minute that I was just too exhausted to go out,” said Peig.

Next, a water activity was to set the scene for a proposal but high winds put paid to that idea. “Eventually, he called me out to the balcony and got down on one knee,” said the bride.

She and Jason, who are now living in Kilcummin, Killarney, were married recently in the Heights Hotel Killarney in a humanist ceremony.

The reception took place in the same venue, with wedding co-ordinator Natalie Bader ensuring all ran perfectly. “My daughter Lily and my brother-in-law Noel sang at the ceremony, it was extremely emotional,” added Peig.

Talented photographer Marie Carroll O’Sullivan, a friend of the bride, captured the occasion on camera, and helping to plan the wedding were both sets of parents, Mary and Gerry O’Sullivan and Bernice and Brendan Mangan.
