Tee up a tea treat for two at the best locations this Mother's Day

Afternoon tea is a trend that's not going away. Esther N McCarthy rounds up the best packages to enjoy this Mother's Day

Who knows tea better than the Irish Mammy? It may be a British ritual but the traditional afternoon tea had been adopted and adapted by us on this side of the water.

Lots of hotels are upping the ante by adding quirky cocktails or Instagrammable pastries to give a twist to the traditional. We pick the most scrumptious and sumptuous of the offerings for Mother’s Day.

The Maryborough Hotel, Cork

Mother’s Day afternoon tea will be served in the Drawing Room at the renovated 18th-century old world mansion.

Priced at €35pp, bookings are being taken at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.

Each mum will get a complimentary glass of prosecco plus a spa voucher for a reduced treatment price on a subsequent visit to the ESPA Spa.

A good excuse to go back for more pampering.


The Brehon, Killarney

Served daily from 2pm this package includes a selection of savoury and sweet treats complemented by a range of speciality teas.

It is served in the hotel’s mezzanine space, overlooking Killarney National Park and features deliriously tasty tiers of bite-sized favourites including smoked salmon, duck liver páté, mini scones, lemon drizzle cake, crème brûlée, macaroons and much more.

It costs €28 per person and can be fizzed up with a snipe of Maschio del Cavalieri prosecco for €8 per person.


Clayton Hotel, Silversprings, Cork

Served in the Tivoli Lounge, choose from a menu made with Kilmore Quay Smoked Salmon, chicken with pesto and mayonnaise open sandwiches, pastries and warm homemade scones, you can top the afternoon off with a glass of bubbly.

Gluten-free afternoon tea also available.

Hayfield Manor, Cork

The Sereni-Tea package includes the choice of one-hour Elemis treatments at The Beautique Spa followed by their afternoon tea, an assortment of pastries and cakes freshly prepared in the 5-star hotel’s patisserie.

It’s priced at €125pp.


Druids Glen Hotel & Golf Resort

On Mother’s Day, Sunday, March 31, Druids Glen is offering afternoon tea for two for €64. Enjoy a delicious array of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and finish with a selection of sweet pastries.

Or if your mum is more at home in the spa, there is a ‘Spa Delight’package for €175 per person.


Mount Falcon Estate, Co Mayo

Treat your mum to a One Night Rejuvenate package at Mount Falcon Estate in Co Mayo, one of 60 Original Irish Hotels.

It includes one night in a superior room, full Irish breakfast, a 25 min spa treatment each and afternoon tea for two overlooking the state's woodlands or visit the leisure centre.

Powerscourt Hotel Resort& Spa, Co Wicklow

Carter Beauty by Marissa Carter and the five-star Powerscourt Hotel Resort & Spa have teamed up for an afternoon tea available until March 31.

Offering a selection of cakes which take inspiration from the Carter Beauty cosmetics range, the collaboration promises to tantalise tastebuds with three cakes available alongside a selection of savoury sandwiches.

The MET at theMetropole Hotel, Cork

A classic afternoon tea in the newly refurbished surroundings of the Tea Room at The MET at the Metropole Hotel is on offer in Cork city.

Freshly made scones with homemade clotted cream and jam; sandwiches and a selection of treats, including mini chocolate fondants and mini Victoria sponge. With a choice of tea or gourmet artisan coffee or a sparkling prosecco offering.

Included in the menu are bellinis and mimosas and special dietary requirements can be catered for. Starts at €25 per person.


Cliff House Hotel, Co Waterford

This tea, created by head chef Martijn Kajuiter, can be followed by a pampering spa therapy.

The three-tiers include organic egg mayonnaise and corned beef sandwiches, warm raisin and buttermilk scones with cream served with homemade red fruit preserve and lemon curd, Ardmore carrot cake with pistachio and white chocolate and lemon tart with a fluffy candy floss topping, with a glass of bubbly.

€45 pp or €200 to include tea and a spa therapy for two.


Inchydoney Island Lodge & Spa, West Cork

Book your Mum in for some Botanical Bliss at Inchydoney with their signature spa treatment and Botanical afternoon tea.

Served in the lounge, it includes savoury and sweet delights using botanical ingredients, including a botanical gin cocktail infused with rosemary, juniper and cucumber.

The package is €245 pp sharing including an overnight stay, afternoon tea with a cocktail and a spa treatment.

Mum also gets a gift of a handmade Inchydoney candle.


Adare Manor, Co Limerick

Adare Manor’s offering is served in The Gallery and their pastry chef Xavier Torne has created a jewel-box menu, including especially for Mother’s Day, sweet treats paired with a selection of blended teas from around the world.

Dainty cut sandwiches, crafted miniature pastries and warm scones served with clotted cream and daily-made lemon curd; this is available from €110 for two people.


Lismore Castle, Co Waterford

Enjoy afternoon tea in the Pugin Room and experience a unique preview of Lismore Castle Spring Gardens on Mother’s Day.

Afternoon tea will be served by the castle’s very own butler, Denis Nevin. €25pp.


Montenotte Hotel, Cork

With spectacular views of Cork city in the background, this rebel-inspired tea includes a selection of treats created with Cork produce from Ardsallagh and Milleens cheese bites with Ballymaloe Relish to Cork Gin Trifle, Murphys Stout Chocolate Tart and Barry’s Tea Crème Brulee and Tanora Pate de Fruit.

It’s also a tribute to Cork Chamber 200. €32 pp and pre-booking is required.
