Trend of the week: A salute to simplicity

Start a new style slate with a salute to simplicity, says Annmarie O'Connor.

INSPIRATION

With the party season behind us and a new year in tow, there's no better time to cleanse the sartorial palette.

Adopting the minimalist mantra of clean lines, neutral hues and a utility bias may appear basic but their combined magic makes for something basically amazing.

Think military-inspired pieces like boiler suits, cargo pants and cleat-soled shoes with tie-waists toggles and naval buttons creating a uniform you'll want to wear every day.

STYLE NOTES

  • BOILER SUIT: Nod to the ’70s with a tissue-thin polo neck and boots.
  • PERFECT PARKA: Scandi brand Arket’s hooded parka (arket.com, €175) – made from plastic bottles and recycled polyester yarn – boasts hidden zips and snap padding to attach insulating liners (sold separately) for a truly seasonless coat.
  • CARGO PANTS: Look to styles that sit on the natural waist and avoid unflattering thigh pockets. Pair with a simple t-shirt, loafers and fitted blazer.
  • MILITARY SHIRT: Buttoned and belted, wear with a pencil skirt or cigarette pants for an unusual twist.
