Queer Eye’s Tan France shares his key rule for what to wear, writes Ella Walker
He brought us the French-tuck, has the perfect silver bouffant, and is always dressed sensationally.
Now, Queer Eye’s fashion expert, Tan France, is back on Netflix with new show. Next In Fashion, which Tan co-hosts with Alexa Chung, sees budding designers compete to win a cash prize and break into the industry.
Chung and France? They’re arguably the dream-presenting duo – the style points between them are really quite immense.
We caught up with France, 36, on the release of his memoir, Naturally Tan – in which the Doncaster-born entrepreneur and telly presenter, now based in the US, opened up about his life, work and the difficulties he’s faced, as well as his fashion nous.
So what’s his number-one style rule?
“OK, I don’t do fashion rules,” states France. “I hate a rule, because it’s fashion, it should be playful.”
However, nudge him a little and he does have specific feelings regarding a certain footwear brand. “The only rules I have as far as ‘don’ts’ go, are no Crocs – they’re the worst,” he says pointedly. “There’s no way of making that look attractive, whatsoever.”
Overall though, “as far as rules go in general, the only rule I would suggest is that you go for something that truly makes you feel good about yourself – whether I like it or not.
“If it makes you feel good about yourself, go for it,” he adds. And you can’t argue with that.
