Black Magic Fashion: A haunting elegance to autumn winter collections

Something wicked this way comes! From Prada’s high-fashion take on Wednesday Addams to the dark romance of Simone Rocha, there was a haunting elegance to the autumn winter collections.

The gothic look is back for 2019, so learn how to master grown-up goth and make it your winter go-to for spellbinding style. Carolyn Moore reports.

Black Magic Fashion: A haunting elegance to autumn winter collections

1. The Vampire’s Wife

For a goth look that’s less teen angst, more A-List sophisticate, take your style cue from cult designer Susie (wife of Nick) Cave.

Get her look in this tulle dress, €95, Oasis.

2. Put the boot in

An essential element of any goth-inspired look this season is the right pair of boots. Go super chunky and cyber-punky or keep it romantic with ornate details.

Boots €82, Zara.

3. Wednesday's Child

She's creepy and she's kooky, mysterious and spooky!

Wednesday Addams was Miuccia Prada's muse for fall.

To get the look, think black lace and white collars - Greta braids optional! Prada dress, €1650, Brown Thomas.

4. New romantic

Whether it's wistful Victoriana or ethereal layers, the gothic look is about romance with an edge.

Toughen up this H&M blouse (€59.99) with leather trousers and boots.

5. Witchy woman

For proof that ‘grown up goth’ is an achievable style-goal, look no further than Stevie Nicks. Channel her spellbinding style in this layered tulle skirt, €299, Marc Cain, Cork.

6. Shine bright

As evidenced at Prada, the nu-goth look comes with cyberpunk undertones, so keep your loo n-point and add dimension with these iridescent leggings, €249, Marc Cain, Cork.

7. Gothic glam

There’s a Rosemary’s Baby retro feel to this sixties-style shift. We’re calling it the perfect party dress for the season of the witch velvet and lace dress, €29.95, Zara.

8. Witching hour

For a preppy take on the gothic look, channel the subversive style of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. We think Miss pellman would be charmed by this pretty Zara sweater, €39.95.

9. The lady is a vamp

With its buttoned-up neckline, ribbon tie and full sleeves, this sheer lace blouse is the perfect combination of covered up and revealing. Blouse, €50, River Ireland.

10. Another dimension

Break up an all black look with texture – some sequins here; a little bit of Lurex there. Sumptuous, tactile velvet is the perfect addition. Jacket, €55, Dorothy Perkins.
