Berets to baker boys: the hottest hat trends for winter

Berets to baker boys: the hottest hat trends for winter

With the dawn of a new decade and all this optimistic talk of what 2020 will bring, it’s easy to forget that we’re still smack bang in the middle of winter with a whole lot of cold weather to come before spring arrives.

That means winter woollies are still on high rotation and a cosy hat is essential if you’re venturing out on frosty mornings or chilly evenings.

The good news is that this year there’s more choice than ever when it comes to headgear, because the AW19 catwalks brought us lots of fabulous hat-spiration – and not just boring beanies.

To be fair, some of these looks were a bit bonkers – take Loewe’s cloches with three fins on top, or the marabou feather headpieces at Alessandra Rich, but there were plenty of wearable options too.

Top of the list are the chic wide-brimmed fedoras at Celine, teamed with slouchy coats, flouncy neck scarves and aviator sunglasses to create the ultimate Parisian cool-girl look, while the brightly coloured fedoras at Saint Laurent had more of an Eighties feel to them.

At Balmain, monochrome ensembles were topped with leather baker boy caps worn at a jaunty angle, some of them embellished with sequins.

On the high street, you’ll find baker boy hats in every fabric from faux leather and vinyl to corduroy to tweed.

The beret was back at House of Holland, where models multicoloured ensembles were topped with matching military style caps as part of the ‘Global Citizen’ collection.

Perhaps the most surprising millinery trend to emerge from the autumn/winter shows was the return of the bucket hat.

Traditionally a summer staple, the Nineties throwback was reimagined by Dior designer Maria Grazia Chiuri in a collection inspired by British style tropes, the black and leopard print ‘bob’ hats adorned with a net veil.

But if all those catwalk designs don’t float your boat, you can still find cool and cosy bobble hats in sunny hues to brighten up your winter outfits.

Here are six of the best high street hats to see you through the season…
