As Lizzo rocks the ultimate micro bag at the AMAs, here’s how the tiny trend got so huge

Just when we thought the micro bag trend had peaked, along came Lizzo and blew the competition out of the water.

At last night’s American Music Awards, the Juice singer appeared on the red carpet carrying a bag so miniscule it was only just bigger than one of her bejewelled nails.

“It’s custom, there’s only three in the world,” she said of the Valentino bag, worn with a Valentino ruffled orange one-shoulder mini dress, joking she had “tampons, a flask of tequila, condoms,” in the bag.

While the singer was nominated in three categories, she didn’t take home any awards on the night, but she certainly won the red carpet.

Twitter went into overdrive too. An account called @lizzostinybag was quickly created with the purpose of letting fans guess what was inside the petite purse.

Small, handheld bags have always been popular at awards ceremonies, but how did we go from compact clutches to ridiculously small micro bags?

Here’s how the itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny trend has evolved…

Jacquemus

It all started with French designer Jacquemus, whose founder introduced the Le Chiquito mini bag as part of his AW17 collection.

Measuring just 12cm by 6cm, the little leather bag was a classic square handbag shape with a top handle that retailed at £400.

The diminutive accessory immediately made headlines and was worn by celebrities including Kendall Jenner, Rihanna and Beyonce.

After the success of the Chiquito, Jacquemus went one further with the introduction of the £200 Le Chiquiti, an even smaller version of the now famous bag – and the ‘micro bag’ trend was born.

While you might have been able to fit lipstick, keys and a credit card in its predecessor, the new 8.5cm wide Chiquiti was obviously intended for decorative purposes only.

Brandon Maxwell

American designer Brandon Maxwell jumped on the micro bag trend at his SS18 show, when Gigi Hadid carried a teensy-weensy gold bag down the catwalk.

The model later appeared on The Tonight Show, revealing that the micro bag was basically a mirror compact and gifting one to host Jimmy Fallon.

High street mini bags

It wasn’t long before fast fashion retailers cottoned on to the trend, bringing out faux leather mini and micro bags that bore a striking resemblance to their high end counterparts.

Brands like Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing and New Look have created little handbags so you can try the trend without shelling out hundreds on a designer version.

Practical? No they’re not, but if Lizzo says micro bags rule, who are we to argue?
