2019 – A Year in Red Carpet Style

As we step into a new decade and prepare to look ahead to what 2020 has in store, let's take a style trip down memory lane and the red carpet looks that defined 2019. Carolyn Moore reports.

No Joke

Joker star Zazie Beetz has established herself as one to watch for her style choices as much as her acting. She stole the show at the Venice film festival in this suitably dramatic Valentino ball gown.

Style Queen

The breakout star of last year’s The Crown was Ice Princess Anne, Erin Doherty - and she’s not monkeying around on the red carpet. This quirky Valentino gown oozes personality.

Power Play

2019 was the year the power pantsuit was usurped – by the power skirt suit! Not afraid of a strong style statement, actress and activist Yara Shahidi exemplified the look in Gucci.

In The Pink

There's no stopping Tracee Ellis Ross, as the actress goes from strength to strength, embracing ever-bolder choices, like this Christopher John Rogers puffball skirt and blouse.

Green Goddess

Actress and singer Zendaya rarely puts a foot wrong on the red carpet, but at the 2019 Emmys, this corset wisp of satin - with shades of Poison Ivy - almost broke the Internet.

Full Circle

Hailee Steinfeld is not one to shy away from a bold red carpet look, and the domineering silhouette of this tailored Balmain look is one if the boldest we saw in 2019.

Boiling Point

Nothing topped the boiler suit for ubiquity in 2019, but Lupita Nyong’o still managed to shine in a Bande Noir number that referenced the costumes from her hit movie Us.

Simply Marvelous

Brightening her blonde hair made everything Brie Larson wore look ten times edgier, and this Rodarte trouser and crop top set had the edge on her Captain Marvel press tour.

Golden Girl

Her fashion moment came when she modeled a 2019 version of THAT Versace dress but going understate when J Lo really shines.

This Reem Acra gow crowned a stellar year La Lopez.

Shine On

Two press tours in a row didn't dull the sparkle Crazy Rich Asians and Captain Marvel actress Gemma Chan

She kept her style game strong exquisite looks like this Ralph & Ru jumpsuit.
