Does waxing make facial hair regrowth worse?

My daughter has recently been asking about getting her upper lip waxed. She is 14, I don’t think she needs it and I’m worried it will make the hair regrowth worse. I don’t mind her getting her eyebrows waxed, and I’ve given her a razor for her underarms and legs. Do you have any tips for hair removal for teens? — Gladys, Co Kerry.

When you come into your teens, your body is basically bombarded with hormones very quickly, which leads to the growth of more hair and darker hair.

Sometimes it isn’t as noticeable as many think, but going from none to some can greatly affect self-esteem.

You actually do not need to worry, as waxing or removing darker or thicker facial hair does not make more hair grow, or make hairthicker, as the myth leads people to believe.

When I say darker or thicker, I’m making the distinction between superfluous and vellus hair. To get nerdie for a moment, superfluous hair is the terminology for thedarker, coarser hair we develop as we get older.Vellus hair is the dusting of light-coloured, fluffy hair we all have all over us.

So long as her upper lip hair is darker or coarser than the fluffy hair on her cheeks, waxing will not affect the growth or thickness of the hair.

It may look slightly stubbly as it grows between waxing, but if your daughter understands this, I’dactually recommend upper lipwaxing, so long as it is done by aprofessional waxer. Over time, many find that waxing causes their hair to thin and become less noticeable.

If it is fluffier vellus hair, waxing it may stimulate blood circulation to the hair follicles, which can lead to it becoming coarser, so waxersrecommend avoiding this.

When it comes to the face, hot wax is preferable to warm wax.

Warm wax is cooler than hot wax. It is spread thinly across the area, and then a paper or fabric strip isapplied to stick to the wax and hair.

It is removed straight away, which makes it quicker than a hot wax.

Hot wax, on the other hand, is spread more thickly across smaller areas, allowed to cool and set, and then removed.

The reason that hot wax is better for facial waxing is that it allows the hair follicle to swell, which means that the terminal hair will come out more easily.

I feel that nothing beats a Waxperts wax because the training theyprovide is second next to none, the carebefore and after is to a tee, andWaxperts wax is of incredibly high quality.

As a general rule, I am not a fan of depilatory creams or bleaching, as the ingredients are often far too harsh for the skin.

If used incorrectly, they can cause chemical burns.

Threading is another skin-friendly solution, as is laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal is a longer-term solution than threading orwaxing, but it is a lot more expensive and isn’t suitable for everyone.

If you decide that waxing is the best solution for your teen, ensure that she follows the correct aftercare to prevent infection or anycongestion.

Pain-wise, there isn’t a hugedifference between the eyebrow area and the upper lip area so she should be well able for it.

THE NERDIE PICK

I love a versatile product and I love it even more when it’s Irish. Waxperts Wonder Pads were created by Waxperts as a solution to ingrown hairs post-waxing, but they can be used on spots, keratosis pilaris, lumps and bumps on the body, grazes, bug bites…you name it.

They contain salicylic acid, a favourite exfoliating acid of mine. Salicylic acid is an antiseptic, which means it prevents the growth of bacteria and therefore it is ideal for ingrown hairs.

They’re incredibly easy to use too! All you need to do is swipe the pad across the area and you’re done.
