Online sales are bringing new bidders and buyers to Irish auctioneers from the most unlikely locations. Doneraile-based Aidan Foley, who quickly moved to an online-only model when the pandemic lockdown began in Ireland, will hold a two-day sale next Saturday and Sunday.

He reports that successful online auctions make more work for the auctioneers.

There is more demand for pre-sale reports and afterwards lots have to be packaged and despatched, sometimes crated. One lot from his sale at the beginning of May went to Sri Lanka and buyers and collectors registered from around the globe.

The upcoming auctions will include boxed sets of promotional discs sent to RTE's Lorcan Murray. Items from his extensive collection of rock and pop memorabilia have already featured at several of Aidan Foley's auctions and garnered much interest.

Another upcoming lot certain to arouse great interest is a pencil sketch of a river scene by John Butler Yeats estimated at €800-€1,200. It is from an artists sketchbook purchased at a Yeats family dispersal auction.

Around 700 lots will be offered in two sales starting at noon next Saturday and on Sunday week. Thus far Aidan Foleys online average has been 60 lots per hour, and he is hoping to improve on this.

Victor Mee's online auction at Cloverhill, Co. Cavan this weekend features garden and salvage materials from Gerry Daly, an inveterate collector whose shop in Armagh supplied vintage items to Irish pubs around the world. Now retiring he is selling his personal collection.

The auction this weekend will be followed by a sale of architectural items, pub fittings and collectibles on June 6 and 7.

Meantime Sean Eacrett of Ballybrittas, Co. Laois is planning a six-day online auction of the props of TV series Into the Badlands in association with AMC Productions at the Heritage Golf Resort in Killenard beginning on June 29.

This date is subject to change but at this stage it is planned to hold a live viewing with PPE supplied on arrival at a venue where social distancing is relatively easy to organise. There will be around 6,500 lots with viewing from June 26.

In Clonmel, Larry O'Keeffe is conducting a timed online auction of antiques and collectibles until May 31 and a timed online jewellery auction by Sean Eacrett also runs to May 31.

Bonhams is offering contemporary work by Irish artists Conor Harrington and Sean Scully in its post-war and contemporary art private treaty sales. A large oil by Cork-born Harrington, L'Amour e La Violence, executed in 1913, and Mirror from 2008 by Sean Scully are available, with prices on request.

At Sotheby's a sale of 140 works of antiquities, Old Masters and 19th-century paintings, Modern British art and European sculpture from the collection of London dealer Danny Katz is online until May 27.
