Podcast Corner: Cork city gears up for inaugural Podcast Festival

THE inaugural Cork Podcast Festival takes place in various venues on October 11-13. The headline show is the West Cork podcast, which quickly sold out Cork Opera House (October 12, 8pm). Examining the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, season one of the show, only available on Audible, is one of the best true crime series around. Season two is in the works, as the makers Sam Bungee and Jennifer Forde headed to Paris earlier this year to cover the trial in absentia of Ian Bailey. Expect some snippets at the live show.

The Creep Dive (Kino, October 13, 3pm) is one of the word-of-mouth hits in Irish podcasting this year. Mother of Pod hosts Sophie White and Jen O’Dwyer are joined by Cassie Delaney as they go beyond the headlines you might remember but never investigated. They’re very funny (a little too jokey, it can take a while for episodes to get going), foul-mouthed, but leave you hanging for the next detail. ‘It’s Never Plain Sailing’ is a particularly nerve-wracking 90- minute show.

In a similar vein, Those Conspiracy Guys (Kino, October 12, 5.30pm) has been running for five years and has lost one of its titular guys, now hosted by Gordon Rochford and a guest. All of the main conspiracies that jump to mind — JFK, Amanda Knox, Madeleine McCann, Area 51 — are in the archives, some of which can only be listened to through subscribing to their Patreon page. They could be more tightly edited, not least the latest episode, which is over two hours long. It reminisces about the Dublin comedy scene, with guest Gary Lynch meandering to Obama’s presidency, and eventually wading through the story of the US killer, the Butcher of Plainfield.

YOU’VE GOT TO HEAR THIS: It’s been 18 months since the first season of West Cork, but in the meantime Bungee and Forde also wrote and produced Stay Free: The Story of the Clash, an eight-episode series narrated by Public Enemy’s Chuck D and only available on Spotify. It’s interesting hearing how the punk band formed, were meticulous in honing their sound in their Rehearsal Rehearsals space in Camden.
