Game Tech: 2020 for big game hunters

Now that we are living in the future, gaming is no longer about ‘consoles’ and ‘controllers’. In the year 2020, we have realised that life itself is a simulation, constructed by humans long gone, who left us to fend for ourselves in the system.

How shall we use that knowledge? Honestly, who cares – this simulation has Half-life Alyx! Here are our most anticipated games of the year:

Cyberpunk 2077 (April / Consoles and PC):

A huge, open-ended world from the creators of The Witcher 3.

While the cyberpunk genre no longer feels like an inevitable future, it remains thematically essential and oozes with cool. Keanu Reeves stars as Johnny Silverhand in this role-playing opus, in which you explore Night City and live ‘street-level’ stories from a first-person perspective.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (March 3, PS4):

From the future — to the past. Final Fantasy VII is arguably the game that defined the original PlayStation, showing players all over the world what the medium was really capable of achieving.

It was epic, orchestral and action-packed, the equivalent of three Netflix series in one package.

After years of clamouring for a complete remake, fans finally get their wish this year.

Half-life Alyx (March, PC):

Now, to a future nobody thought would happen.

Gordon Freeman was left hanging in 2004, as his battle against the alien Combine — who arrived through a portal he created — was left unresolved.

Fans have heard nothing since. Gordon remains in limbo, but the series is finally getting a new entry this year in a prequel, Half-life Alyx. While Alyx is arriving for Virtual Reality only, it looks amazing nonetheless.

The Last of Us Part II (May 29, PS4):

A 19-year-old Ellie will contend with much more than zombies in The Last of Us Part II. In fact, her biggest challenge could be managing her own thirst for revenge.

The Last of Us seems to have matured even further in this sequel, giving us a more open world of combat possibilities and adding even more depth to the story and lore.

Considering the pedigree, it’s almost certain to be excellent.

While we don’t know a lot about the next Halo game, we do expect it to launch with the Xbox One Series X late in the year.

Considering the importance of the game as a launch title, we’re expecting fireworks from Xbox Game Studios, both in single-player mode and multiplayer.

A return to Halo’s roots is exactly what the first-person shooter genre needs right now.

Deadly Premonition 2:

A BlessingDisguise (TBD, Nintendo Switch): Ok, so we don’t know exactly when this will drop, but we expect our jaws to drop with it.

Deadly Premonition is the industry’sgreatest work of surrealist humour, directly derived from David Lynch but told in the unique language of gaming.

In this prequel, special FBI agent York visits a small town in New Orleans to investigate a murder. Deadly!

Empire of Sin (TBD):

The only Irish-made game on the list, developed by Romero Games in Galway.

Empire of Sin is a fun-looking strategy game set in gangster 1920s Chicago, where your companions seem to have a personality of their own and can react differently according to the situations.

Empire of Sin seems to be a distant relative of old-school titles like the original Fallout and X-Com, but with its own unique spin.

YS IX: Monstrum Nox (Sept 26 / Consoles and PC):

We’ll finish our list with the latest game in a cult series.

There are very few titles that capture the spirit of 16-bit action RPGs, but in modernized form.

However, YS is by far and away the best.

Monstrum Nox follows the hero Adol during his time in the prison city of Balduq – an absolutely fantastic setting for a game like YS.

Expect action, exploration, amazing music and hours of satisfaction.
