The MTV Video Music Awards is one of the biggest nights in music, and as it’s not constrained by a particularly formal dress code, celebs like Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande hit the red carpet showing off how fun their style can be.
And it wasn’t just the outfits that turned heads – stars had to have similarly eye-catching make-up. One trend that seemed to dominate was metallics; everything gold, silver and glittery was used to vamp up a look.
Here are some of the most stand-out metallic beauty looks of the night…
Cardi B made one of her first appearances since giving birth, and the new mum definitely cut a sophisticated look with her new pixie crop. Her make-up – done by Erika La’ Pearl – was similarly classy, but still kept things fun.
Rather than a whole lot of glittery shadow, La’ Pearl lightly applied a sparkly magenta colour beneath the eyes to match the rapper’s dress. She told Refinery29 she used MTHRSHP SUBVERSIVE La Vie en Rose Eyeshadow Palette from Pat McGrath for the look.
Latin pop singer Amara La Negra came to the event with her signature Afro, and didn’t hold back in the beauty stakes. Going full Diana Ross glam, her make-up artist Kristen-Kaye Barnaby used thick, long lashes and a whole lot of metallic eyeshadow – a low-key look this was not.
Orange Is The New Black actor Dascha Polanco went all in on the trend for silver eyeshadow, exaggerating hers into giant cat-eyes – she looked like she was wearing a superhero mask.
Sparkly silver dresses can seem a little princessy at times, but American singer Bebe Rexha made sure hers was anything but, styling it with a distinctly punk rock edge. Her make-up was heavy and dark, but avoided being too OTT thanks to a metallic shadow towards the middle of her eyes, which matched her gown.
Model Jasmine Sanders is known as Golden Barbie, so it comes as no surprise she attended the VMAs in a gold dress with eyeshadow to match. Bonus points for the gothic, dark berry lip – definitely not an easy thing to pull off.
Model Winnie Harlow looked like a screen siren with her poker straight long hair, voluminous lashes and gold eyeshadow – we don’t think we’re the only ones getting major Cher vibes from this look.
Actor Amandla Stenberg showed the versatility of metallics – you don’t just have to go with golds and silvers. She brought a sunny, sparkly orange eye to the red carpet, which perfectly matched the Seventies vibe of her outfit and choppy bob with baby bangs.
Singer Grace VanderWaal also matched her beauty look to her outfit – but in a completely different way. Instead of bright colours, she instead opted for soft silver tones and a beret, providing a distinctly retro Parisian vibe.
