'We need to find a way to develop world sustainability', President Michael D Higgins

The President says we need to find a way to move away from short term disaster responses.

Michael D Higgins made the call at the first ever World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul today.

He has chastised world leaders for failing to provide adequate support to those in crisis situations and called for a profound re-think of international politics to end the global humanitarian crisis.

President Higgins says we need to find a way to develop the world sustainability: "I think that with recognising the civilian casualties of conflicts.

"How are we to build fundamental trust between the state and the citizen? How are we to get a discourse that is capable to bringing us from responding to short term disasters to sustainable development?"
