Viable pipe bomb found in Tyrone

A pipe bomb has been discovered in a car in the North.

The device was thrown into the vehicle in Strabane, Co Tyrone, early this morning, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Chief Inspector Alan Hutton said it was a reckless act, adding: “There can be no justification for incidents of this type.

“Attacks like this put anyone nearby at risk and I would appeal to the local community to help with the information that we need to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The object was declared viable by army technical officers after an examination.

Mr Hutton added: “This was a totally reckless act and showed no regard for the safety of anyone in the Innisfree Gardens area.”

He said the operation lasted some eight hours and caused a considerable amount of inconvenience to those who had to move from their homes or were unable to go about their everyday business.
