Varadkar: Emigrants should be given vote

The Transport Minister Leo Varadkar says Irish emigrants should be given a vote in General and Presidential elections.

In an interview in today's Sunday Independent, Minister Varadkar said it would bring Ireland 'closer to the diaspora'.

He said the President should be a representative of Irish people around the world and allowing emigrants to have their say in presidential elections would embody that spirit.

Minister Varadkar also said he would, in principle, be in favour of emigrants voting in Dáil elections.
