Gardaí are expected to launch a murder investigation after a two-year-old boy was found dead in an apartment.
The toddler suffered a suspected stab wound to the neck some time today, it is believed, and a women in her 40s was arrested at the scene on Shanganagh Road, Shankill, Co Dublin.
Gardaí who were called to the flat made the discovery shortly before 2pm.
The youngster’s death occurred in the Ridge Hall apartments, a gated residential complex in Ballybrack just north of Shankill in south county Dublin.
No-one other than the woman and the baby boy was at the apartment when officers arrived.
The boy was later pronounced dead by a doctor.
His body remained at the scene for several hours after the discovery and the apartment was sealed off for forensic examination by technical experts and preliminary investigations involving the State Pathologist’s office.
Results from a post mortem examination will likely lead to gardaí launching a full scale murder investigation, said one Garda source.
The arrested woman is being questioned at Dun Laoghaire Garda station.
