Ted Kennedy: Ahern a 'steady and effective leader'

US senator Ted Kennedy today paid tribute to the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, after the news that he will resign on May 6.

"Bertie Ahern has been a steady and effective leader of the Irish people," said the senator.

"...His skillful leadership in the search for peace in Northern Ireland was indispensable in finally achieving a successful resolution of that long-standing conflict. His legacy is clear, and his contribution to peace is enormous.

"All Americans thank him and wish him well, and we hope his unique talents will be of service in resolving conflicts elsewhere in the years ahead in our divided world."
