TD expenses total €24.4m since General Election

Expenses to TDs have cost €24.4m since the last General Election.

It works out at an average of €147,000 per TD since March 2011. The Irish Independent reports that just one in 10 have to provide receipts for their expenses.

The payments are on top of the TDs' Dáil salaries of more than €87,000 a year.

The TD with the highest expenses claim is Fianna Fáil's Michael Moynihan of Cork South West, who has received more than €232,000.

His claim is due to the distance from his base to the Dáil, and an additional allowance for assistant whip duties.

Fine Gael's Pat Breen of Clare received nore than €227,000, as did Cork South Central deputy Ciaran Lynch.

Fine Gael's Joe Carey from Clare and his party colleague deputy Frank Feighan received more than €222,000 since March 2011.

Only one TD - Eamonn Maloney of Labour - does not claim expenses.
