Taoiseach promises to 'act tough' on charities abusing public funds

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny's promised to put an end to charities' abuse of public funds.

Mr Kenny is insisting he will act tough to stop charities from using public fundraising to pay management salaries.

His comments come as the head of the HSE prepares to take questions from TDs about charities breaching its pay cap.

The Taoiseach says abuse of public generosity must be stopped.

The Public Accounts Committee is due to receive a report from the HSE this morning, outlining other agencies with similar salary arrangements to the CRC.

It comes after a number of anonymous whistleblowers came forward and follows reports this morning that St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin has refused to give the HSE details of private allowances for senior executives.

The Irish Times says the hospital refused on the basis that the money involved did not come from public funds.
