Taoiseach plays down poor poll showing

The Taoiseach has dismissed an apparent drop in support for the Government in the latest opinion poll.

The survey published yesterday shows Fianna Fáil up one point but the PDs down two points with increased support for a Fine Gael and Labour coalition.

Speaking at the final Cabinet meeting before the holidays, Bertie Ahern said he was proud of the economic achievements of his government, particularly regarding its control of the public finances.

Mr Ahern added that the most important poll was the one on election day.

"There’s only one opinion poll that matters and that’s on general election day", likely to be next July, he said.
