The Social Democrats say they are a "credible alternative" in the General Election.

A new opinion Poll puts the party on 4% support, with just three days of canvassing left.

Red C pollsters on behalf of Paddy Power spoke to 1002 voters, between Thursday and Sunday.

The results put the party only three points behind Labour, who have more than 30 TDs in the current Government.

Social Democrats candidate Anne Marie McNally says their support levels prove they are serious contenders.

She said: "I certainly wouldn't buy into the narrative that we are any kind of crazy, loony, lefty party. I believe the Social Democrats are putting forward a credible alternative and it's why we are being as successful as we are.

"People can see that we are combining pragmatism with idealism and we are putting forward a vision that is absolutely achievable, it's attainable, it's realistic and it's desirable
