Skerries murder is second tragedy for family

A murder investigation is formally underway following the fatal stabbing of a grandfather in Dublin.

Michael Gannon was stabbed a number of times after he was attacked while babysitting his two grandchildren in Skerries.

A 29-year-old Romanian man is still being questioned by Gardaí in connection with the incident.

It has been reported by The Herald that this is the second time the Gannon family has experienced tragedy.

Michael's nephew, Daniel O'Haire died last year at the age of 31 after he had been confined to a wheelchair for almost a decade because of a stabbing in 2003.

The results of a post mortem examination by the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy on Michael Gannon's body show he died from multiple stabbings.

Gardai have now formally launched a murder investigation into the 55-year-old's death.

Mr Gannon, from Finglas, was minding his two grandchildren at his daughter's home in Mourne Park in Skerries, North County Dublin, when he was attacked and stabbed to death.

The incident happened at around 6pm yesterday evening.

It is understood that while the children were in the house at the time they did not witness the attack.

Shortly afterwards a 29-year-old man, who had locked himself in a nearby house for a time, was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The man was taken to Ballbriggan Garda Station where he is still being questioned.

A knife has also been recovered and is due to undergo forensic tests at Garda Heaquarters.

It is understood Gardai are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
