Shatter: Hanafin's position 'untenable'

Fine Gael is calling on the Taoiseach Brian Cowen to consider sacking his Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin after she revealed she voted against him last night.

Ms Hanafin is insisting she had no issue with Brian Cowen being Taoiseach, but could not vote confidence in him to continue as leader of Fianna Fáil.

But Fine Gael's Alan Shatter said Mary Hanafin's position in Cabinet is "unconstitutional".

Mr Shatter said: "I believe Minister Hanafin's position is untenable. We now know that she is sitting in government with mental reservations about the Taoiseach.

"I don't believe you can remain in government and focus on the problems of real people who want their problems addressed. It is simply incompatible."
