Seven-year-old boy dies after falling into Cork river

A seven-year-old boy who fell into a river in Cork has lost his fight for life in hospital.

He was airlifted from Cork University Hospital to Our Lady's Hospital in Crumlin where he died earlier this evening.

This tragic incident happened at the Owenacurra river which runs alongside the boy's home in Tir Cluain near Midleton in Co. Cork.

The alarm was raised just before 7pm yesterday evening by one of the boy's friends who was playing with him near the river.

His neighbour drove to the river and pulled the boy from the water.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital before being transferred by helicopter to Our Lady's Hospital in Crumlin.

He was put in an induced coma in the hospital's intensive care unit but sadly lost his fight for life just after 8.30pm this evening.
