Seven charged after €4.6m cannabis seizure

Seven men have been charged in connection with a garda operation in which 5,800 cannabis plants were seized.

The plants had a total approximate street value of €4.6m, pending analysis.

Eight people were arrested in 'Operation Nitrogen', an intelligence-led operation by the Garda National Drugs Unit (GNDU) targeting the cultivation of cannabis.

As a part of Operation Nitrogen, gardaí from GNDU, assisted by other gardaí, searched a number of premises at different locations throughout the country on Wednesday.

Of the seven men now due before the courts:

- One will appear before Gorey District Court at 10.30am today;

- Two will appear before Drogheda District Court at 10.30am;

- Four will appear before Longford District Court at 10.30am.

The eighth man who was arrested continues to be detained at Mullingar garda station.
