The Government is being accused of causing the latest property tax blunder by ramming legislation through the Oireachtas without proper debate.
Revenue looks set to have to refund thousands of people who bought homes this year.
Fianna Fáil's Finance spokesman Michael McGrath says a mistake in the wording of the legislation has led to the latest debacle:
"The Government's intention at the time was that first-time buyers buying a property by the end of 2013 would be exempt from the local Property tax until 2016."
"But because of a mistake in the wording of the section, it now appears that the exemption applies to non-first-time buyers as well."
