Rescue mission launched off Galway Bay

A rescue mission has been launched off Galway Bay where a French registered ship is on fire with 26 people on board.

The fire was reported on the fish factory ship early this morning some 50 miles west of the Aran Islands.

The Irish coast guard and a fire fighting crew from Galway are evacuating the crew.

One crew member, who was suffering from smoke inhalation, is already being airlifted to hospital.

The vessel is being escorted by another French vessel into Galway Bay where it will anchor.
