Five resourceful firefighters had an unexpected arrival at a Dublin fire station last night.

Yesterday evening a woman drove into the Rathfarnam station. Her daughter, who was also in the car, was in labour.

She had realised that her daughter would not make it to a hospital in time to give birth, so the grandmother-to-be pulled in at the nearby fire station.

The baby girl was born in the back of the car, thanks to the assistance of the trained paramedics at the station, who had just returned with their ambulance from a call.

The mother and baby were later transferred to the Rotunda Hospital.

"Our Rathfarnam crew delivered a baby in the back of mum's car, which pulled in to the forecourt of the station at 9pm last night," they wrote on Twitter.

"Quick thinking granny knew there wasn't time to continue and found help in the form of C Watch.

"D81 was in station and our ambulance was just returning from a previous call."

The Dublin Fire Brigade even extended an invitation to the baby girl to attend their upcoming open day.
